good evening, all...

i'm liz, i'm new to the board, so i just wanted to introduce myself and say hello. i have been listening to radio dismuke for almost a year now and i'm such a huge fan. i hope to learn more about the amazing pieces being played, on this board, and discovering new ones! biggrin.gif

i have been enjoying some josephine baker as of late... does anyone have any suggestions as to which of her songs i should make sure to check out? any other good artists that i should look into? when i listen to dismuke, i listen while i'm doing other things, so unfortunately i don't have a lot of time to check out which song is playing, so i'm limited in my knowledge of specific artists but i'm ready and willing to learn!

thanks in advance to any suggestions!

Hello, Liz. I'm lucky enough to be the first to welcome you to this fanastic forum. There are plenty of very knowledgeable people to offer you guidance. It's great music, isn't it ? Just makes me feel happy.

Anyway, a big hello and welcome from me, in London

Derek

Hello Liz,

As for Josephine Baker recommendations, I'll have to pass to someone with more knowledge with her recordings. She's rather obscure on sites like JOL and RHJ so my advice would be to start with YouTube and see what sounds good and you like. Here's a link to get you started.

A good place to start might be with this link.
Scroll through the topics to find those dealing with favorites. And a search in the Dismuke HOW archives, using a pertinent name, should return some results.

Howdy Liz,

Here's some of my favorite Josephine Baker recordings that you might enjoy:

After I Say I'm Sorry (1927)
accompanied by Le Jacob's Jazz

Confessin' (1930)
accompanied by the Melodic Jazz du Casino de Paris

Si J'étais Blanche (1932)

C'est Lui (1934)
accompanied by Le Jazz du Poste Parisien

My all time favorite, and I believe the greatest female vocalist of the 1920s, is Jane Green (1897-1931). The following is, in my opinion, her finest recording. In addition to Jane's superb vocal, Nat and the boys really go to town with such a jazzy accompaniment as only the Victor Orchestra could do.

Honey Bunch -- Jane Green with Nat Shilkret and the Victor Orchestra (1926)

Hi Liz and everyone- I'm new to the message board as well, although I've been listening to Dismuke for several years now. I've had at least one crank-up phonograph and played 78's since I was a kid.
I'm fortunate in being a musician with one of the great 20's and 30's bands from San Francisco, the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra.
It is happy music indeed- and Jane Green is also one of my favorites.
Has anyone been listening to Dismuke in their car, with your mobile phone? Even satellite radio doesn't quite hit the right time period for me- although I've emailed them to inform them that they're missing an important genre.
Nice knowing there are so many devotees of the music I love! Cheers- Bob

Hey Bob,

Welcome to the forum. You'll find several people here who love vintage music from the first half of the 20th century. People ranging from students in their 20s to grandparents. Myself, I fit the former category! laugh.gif

A warm welcome to our newcomers, Liz and Bob ...

Liz, if Victor has whetted your appetite for the WONDERFUL vocalist, Jane Green, I invite you to download this ZIP file of 23 of her recordings. Unfortunately, Jane did not record as many sides as her peers; This ZIP file represents the majority of her work.

Jane Green is one of my favorites as well ... and my favorite recording of hers is:

If You Hadn't Gone Away (1925)
