Do you have a favorite recording by Annette Hanshaw?

As with many vocalists, picking a favorite recording is difficult (if not impossible)... but,

I would have to give the nod to:

Fit As A Fiddle (1932)

If you haven't already heard the radio interview with Annette that Laughland just posted, RUN, don't walk, over to that thread!:

Ooops, I'd also be curious to know if you like (or dislike) her Hawaiian sessions ... and if you like (or dislike) her Helen Kane Boop stuff ... For me, I really enjoy the Hawaiian tracks ( I am especially fond of "Singin' In the Rain" from 1929) but I'm not that crazy about her Helen Kane impersonation...

Don't know that I have one favorite, I like them all. Here's a site that uses a few of her hits in a rather different way. This one has been up before, but I think it got hacked off on 3-4. Anyway here it is again, it uses Quicktime and the download can be slow at times.

Pretty tough decision to make. One of my favorites is Lovable And Sweet (1929)

My favorite pic of her is this one.

Like others have said - a tough choice - there is no single favorite so I'll select one and just call it one of her best... (realizing of course that I'd choose something different if you ask me tomorrow...):

I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling

I'm sure that this thread is making some people want to hear more of her... I'm going to post the link to the Annette Hanshaw page at redhotjazz where you can select any one of dozens of other favorites to compare... tongue.gif

Interesting... I think I feel the reverse: I like her Kane-esque songs better than the Hawaiian ones - but I really don't dislike any of these styles.
I love how she uses both her normal voice with her Kane-voice in You Wouldn't Fool Me Would You?

This little exercise inspired me to go listen to about an hour of her music looking for a favorite. You know what - it melted all the stress built up from a hectic day pretty effectively... thanks for the idea Ian!

Yes.... great topic.

My three favorite Annette Hanshaw recordings are:

When I am Housekeeping For You

Somehow the message of this song gets lost on most ladies of today biggrin.gif .

Aint' Cha

Just a really cute song. Pay attention to the second chorus.

and

That's You, Baby

A great peppy tune full of fun "Annette" additions in the second chorus. From the lost "Fox Movietone Follies of 1929"

I'm willing to give you ALL the credit Laughland -for posting those interview clips. They are so thrilling to listen to. She was SUCH an irreplaceable winner.

Here's another clip that got hacked on 3-4, but I think it's worth repeating. This might have been her top hit and a top favorite.

Alright... how about one more treat then...? I think you guys will love this - I sure have ever time I've heard it!

Now in the Cullen interview when asked about it, Annette says she began recording in 1928 (and speculated that some collectors want to push the date earlier!) seemingly concerned about appearing old perhaps. But in reality she had recordings out as early as 1926.

And I've got a little sample of her singing even earlier than that - one which was never released as a 78!

It's a six-minute clip of Annette singing a medley of songs which you may not have heard before - for an audition she made at Pathe in 1925. I love her little comment at one point about "I'm not doing it well, you know - I'm all quivery". And it has her famous "that's all!" at the end. Anyway, here it is:

Annette's Pathe audition (1925)

It is impossible to single out just one Annette Hanshaw recording. Here are a FEW of my favorites:

Ho Hum

The Way I Feel Today

Ain't That a Grand and Glorious Feeling? (Or any of the sides with that group including Eddie Lang, actually).
