I've updated RealPlayer to Version 11 and I've been trying it out on a few of Jazz on Line's latest acquisitions. I find that some of them do not play as expected. A minute or two of one track (not the one labelled) may be followed with a fragment of another, sometimes ending with a bit of the correct recording.

Just three examples I find to be faulty:-

http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/DEC62067B.ram

http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/BRU17914-1.ram

http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/Dec61345-A.ram

Do other people find the same problem?

Oh, I've just found that right-clicking on the MP3 versions and playing in Windows Media Player produces the same errors so I suppose it's nothing to do with RealPlayer.

Any ideas?

Limden, I have no ideas about the cause ... but I can certainly confirm the problems you are noticing with these files. Strange! Lunceford starts out playing "Stormy Weather" although the file is labeled "My Last Affair" ... probably an issue with the source material (or transfer process) don't you think?

Thanks Ian for confirming that there's nothing wrong at my end. I seem to recall that the industrious Michel has a reputation of not replying to emails, I think I'll just wait a while to see if the problem is resolved.

The problem seems to continue, indeed to become worse, so I've sent Michel an email.

Jazz-On-Line supplies their files from common folks like us... the files are only as good as the ones he recieves. A few faulty ones slip by. I have a report with him and have been telling him of the mistakes I find. He does respond pretty consistantly.

Can you list the name of each song and the artist, and i will send him an email about these songs.

Gregory

Hi Gregory

I'm having trouble in back-tracking to files I played days ago and of course the older "latest acquisitions" fall off the bottom of the page with each new day so even though my impression is that there were others around the time of my original post all I can point to at the moment are:-

Life Begins When You're In Love (v B. Holiday) http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/BRU18612-1.ram - plays for 56 seconds total

(this Is) My Last Affair Jimmie Lunceford And His Orchestra http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/Dec61345-A.ram - begins with "Stormy Weather", abrupt switch to "My Last Affair"

I’M PAINTING THE TOWN RED (v B. Holiday) TEDDY WILSON AND HIS ORCHESTRA - http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/BRU17914-1.ram - unidentified male vocalist, abrupt switch to country and western at 1'37"

YOU SHOWED ME THE WAY CHICK WEBB And His Orchestra Vocal Chorus by Ella Fitzgerald - http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/DEC62067B.ram - a muddle of tracks, including "You'd be so easy to love", 1'54'' total

I'll PM you if I find more.

Good to know there's a channel of communication to wonderful Jazz-On-Line smile.gif

Greg, after reading Limden's post on the quirky files showing up, old snoop-dog here did some checking and I was able to find several that were corrupted. I suspected that Michael must have other sources for all the daily postings he does. That would help explain why I was able to find two bad files that were submitted for Thursday January 17,2008. Here they are.

This file is labeled incorrectly. The tune that plays, I think, is 'Shanghai Lil'. It's less than a minute of audio.

Gene Krupa And His Orchestra Whisper While We Dance (1939) B-24927-A Brunswick, 8451
http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/BruB-24927-A.ram
http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/mp3b/BruB-24927-A.mp3

This one seems to be labeled correctly, but it's also very abbreviated.

Teddy Wilson And His Orchestra Life Begins When You're In Love (v B. Holiday) (1936) 18612-1 Brunswick, 7612
http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/ramb/BRU18612-1.ram
http://www.jazz-on-line.com/a/mp3b/BRU18612-1.mp3

I found others, but didn't make note and can't remember the titles. I tried to determined a pattern/patterns to this puzzlement, but didn't find any single factor that would indicate problems. I first thought that the Brunswick and Decca labels might be a pattern, since the ones that Limden listed and the first couple ones I found were these labels. But later I saw other labels that had problems, so I dropped that theory.

The one thing that seems to be a red flag, is the time length. Songs less than a minute or ones greater than four minutes of recorded music.

Hope this helps some.

Don...

Just bumped into another mixed up file... blink.gif

This creation is mostly Paul Whiteman's A Bench In The Park but from about 2:05-2:35 it keeps switching to various other recordings! What a mess!

Now what's going on with Jazz-On-Line??? When I try to listen to some of the songs I get a message that says "File Not Found". It seems that I'm encountering this problem with almost 1/4 of the songs.

If Jazz on Line is having tech problems, perhaps they could just say so. But being told we are "forbidden" is akin to having one's knuckles rapped.
