I wonder how often the Moon has been mentioned in 1900's - 1940's songs.

I can only think of a few at the moment. e.g. Out where the little moonbeams are born / Me and the man on the Moon.

My favorite moon songs.....

Moonstruck -- Gertie Millar (circa 1906)
(featured in the musical Our Miss Gibbs)

Underneath The Japanese Moon -- Irving Kaufman (1915)
Victor 17699

Under The Moon -- Jan Garber and his Orchestra (1927)
Victor 20754

It's The Same Old Moon -- Smith Ballew and his Orchestra (1929)

Lyrics
We're back together, dear, where we first met
We've been apart far too long
We're back together, dear, kissing and yet
Sweetheart, there's something wrong

I see the same old moon, the same old June but not the same old you
The same old place, the same embrace but not the thrill I knew
You love someone, who can it be? Please tell me, Hon, because I can see
That it's the same old moon, the same old June but not the same old you

Under A Texas Moon -- Bert Lown and his Loungers (1930)
Harmony 1088-H
vocal by Smith Ballew

Moonlight Savings Time -- High Hatters (1931)
Victor 22703

Roll Along Prairie Moon (1935)
(featured in the Dennis Potter mini-series and film Pennies From Heaven)

Lyrics
Roll along Prairie Moon, roll along while I croon
Shine above, lamp of love, prairie moon
Way up there in the blue, maybe you're lonely too
Swinging by in the sky, prairie moon

I need your tender light to make things right
You know I'm all alone tonight
Far away shed your beam on the girl of my dreams
Tell her too, I've been through prairie moon

I know a number of tunes with 'Moon' in the title...these include...

Moonlight Serenade.
Moonlight Mood.
Moonglow (Lovely song, that!)

And a very old (1890s) English music-hall song: "My Sweetheart's the Man in the Moon".

What a coincidence you should solicit moon songs today--yesterday I uploaded my Okeh Electric version of Under the Moon to YouTube:

Under the Moon by Mike Markels Orchestra on Okeh Electric

I just realized the flip side of my very first YouTube upload was a moon song, too, so here it is. Jimmy Dorsey plays a clarinet solo following the vocal:

My Miami Moon - Billy Hays Orchestra - Okeh Electric

There's a bunch. Check out this string search on JOL. And I would think that this is just a partial list, there's bound to be lots more.

Oh gosh, there must be hundreds of moon songs, but one of my favorites is Blue Moon sung by Greta Keller.............It's in the Radio Dismuke playlist.

http://www.deezer.com/track/blue-moon-T2982442

BLUE MOON

- words by Lorenz Hart, music by Richard Rodgers

Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Blue Moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for

And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper, "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold

Blue Moon, now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

I hate to get started and there could be some overlap with previous posts

The Moon and the Willow Tree
The Moon is Low
The Moon Kissed the Mississippi
Moon On my Pillow
Moon Over Las Vegas
Moon Over Monte CarloMoonburn
Moonbeam Kiss Her For Me
Moonface
Moonflowers
Moonlight and Pretzels
Moonlight and Roses
Moonlight Fiesta
Moonlight in Hawaii
Moonlight in Heaven
Moonlight on the Campus
Moonlight Over the Islands
Moonlight Propoganda
Moonlight Swim
Moonlight Waltz
Moonshine Lullaby
Moonshine over Kentucky

I am assuming Moonlight Serenade, Moonlight Becomes You, The Moon Got In My Eyes and Moonlight Bay have been previously listed.

I hope someone can help me with my Lee Morse question that should appear soon.

THE COP ON THE BEAT, THE MAN IN THE MOON AND ME" Annette Hanshaw

Of all the people in this lonely old world
we are the lonliest three
The cop on the beat, the man in the moon and me
Around the corner there's a party upstairs
Here on the corner are we
The cop on the beat, the man in the moon and me

I go to my room, and I open the door
There's nothing but gloom -- so it's back to the corner and hang around some more...

I watch the happy couples pass by
There so in love they can't see
The cop on the beat, the man in the moon and me.

Charlie Palloy and the Crown Records house ork did a really good recording of Cop on the Beat.

As for how many "moon" songs there are, counting them all would be like...
1920. Not Irving Berlin's tune from 1929 (same title).
