Watching our recent presidential inauguration and a certain hat; got me to thinking about past millinery and how customs have changed. Maybe the trend is returning to those days when ladies wore large hats. Can the music be far behind? Just dreaming here. Anyway here's a pictorial time line of hat fashions for ladies thru the past 100 years plus a little tune to play along while viewing.

It's a pity that wearing hats for men...and a proper suit...hasn't returned to fashion. And I mean a proper hat, not some flimsy, crappy baseball cap.

Oh hats are in big time these days... all kinds of hats! My job I stand on a street corner waving a sign.. I see it all!! Hats are totally in. Not just baseball caps! They have incorporated hats with a modern style... some dress it up, and you'd be amazed how good guys look with hats even wearing jeans!

Where I live (which is near three schools and has hundreds of people of varying age-groups), the only people I really see wearing hats are those people over fifty. Last week I went out to buy some food and I saw this man in his...60s? 70s? Wearing a very fetching cream-coloured fedora.

Apart from that, all I ever see is baseball caps, or those gawd-awful floppy sunhats.

To me the ultimate men's hats are the fedora, trilby, boater, topper, flat-cap or a homburg. Whoever the hell invented the baseball cap should be dragged into the street and shot.

I have real nice brown fedora that I picked up several years ago at a yard sale for a buck. Sadly, I don't wear it anymore because I got so tired of all the Indiana Jones jokes wherever I went. I do have a small hat collection which includes a straw boater hat that I picked up at an antique shop in 1984 or 85 and a WWII vintage Royal Navy captain's hat.

Wear A Hat With A Silver Lining -- Ted Lewis and his Band (1928)

Anybody know any other hat songs?

Edit --

My Hat's On The Side Of My Head -- Ray Noble and his Orchestra (vocal by Al Bowlly) (1934)

Top Hat, White Tie And Tails -- Ray Noble and his Orchestra (vocal by Al Bowlly) (1935)
I love this version of Top Hat especially with Ray Noble's posh accent.

The lyrics to this song comes to mind. I don't know anything about the background - where it came from or when, and I don't know if there are other verses. If there are, I have never heard them.

"I had a hat when I came in, I hung it on the rack,
I'll have a hat when I go out or break somebody's back,
A peaceful man I am, I am and I don't want to shout,
But I had a hat when I came in and I'll have a hat when I go out!"

How 'bout "El Sombrero de Gaspar" by Cugat? (which always gets my attention when it crops up in the rotation on the stream)

There are various songs which mention hats in their lyrics. "Putting on the Ritz" is one.

"Have you seen the well-to-do?
Up and down Park Avenue?
High hats, and arrow collars,
White spats, and lots of dollars..."

"I made a little post, about a certain hat,
Many responded to it and I'm happy for that,
Just something simple, I thought I'd give it a whirl,
So thanks to all and especially for the ditty from you Flapper Girl"
.

..Now let's see.. Where's my hat????
