Jessie Matthews was one 1920s/30s songbird I don't recall being discussed here which I've been listening to alot lately - at least in part due to the clips of her appearing on YouTube recently. She was a British actress and singer who was quite amazing.

Here are some examples from youtube:

Jessie Matthews - My Heart Stood Still

Dancing on the Ceiling

Head Over Heels

By The Fireside (In The Gloaming)

One More Kiss And Then Goodnight (accompanied by Carroll Gibbons at the piano and by the Savoy Orpheans)

If this leaves you wanting more, there is alot more of her on YouTube (including some posted by perfectjazz78 such as this), but I'd also suggest this page full of mp3s of hers you can enjoy .

Thanks Laughland!

She's a delight ... I've never heard of her before. What a treat to discover a new songbird.

Glad to point her out Ian! I love having new musical discoveries...

Let me add one more clip of her in action from There Goes the Bride - if you watch closely you can see that the band leader is Carroll Gibbons and the band is the Savoy Orpheans...

Jessie Matthews..........................Liza Minnelli

I immediately thought of Liza when I saw the picture of Jessie. What an uncanny resemblance.

Thanks Laughland for the intro of Ms Matthews. I'm impressed with her voice. She has that unique quality that sounds as if she could see any genre and it be wonderful. Some of the songbirds were strickly cut out to be just jazz singers. The really great ones could sing it all.

Is it just me or does Jessie Matthews voice sound a little like Julie Andrews?

Hmmm, when they built my brand new track home, I think they forgot to include the Art Deco detailing and elegance found in Jessie's home :-)

Elegant is a perfect description for that whole clip.
And it's not every songbird who can almost knock herself out with a high leg kick. You can see why her place had to have such high ceilings - in my house she'd be shattering light bulbs with those kicks! tongue.gif

This song, Three Wishes, is one of my favorites of hers.

I think she does at times too Bob.

BTW, want another Matthews-Andrews connection?

One of Jessie Matthews film roles was in "First A Girl". This was remade many years later as "Victor/Victoria" starring Julie Andrews in the same role.

Here's a clip from "First A Girl"... in which she literally is a songbird! tongue.gif

Hmm... a quick heads-up....

I just noticed that the Jessie Matthews film Evergreen is being shown on TCM tomorrow (April 28) at 10PM Eastern/9PM Central.

I don't recall ever seeing her on TCM before.
