What instruments do you think a band really needs to give it that hot 1920's punch?

Without a doubt I think it has to be the Sousaphone. It really sets the beat to any dance music.
'Nebraska' played by Ronnie Munro and his Orchestra is a good example.

What about percussion instruments like the wood block, the cow bell, and the xylophone? Were they big in the 20's?

This song has a ton of them.

Every drummer had temple blocks (usually the ones that look like turtles) and a cowbell in his kit. My dad was a weekend drummer from the 1930s into the 1960s. He had a wood block with cowbells with different pitches on either end. I wonder whatever happened to his maracas.

I think xylophones were used at least on recordings a lot more during the acoustic period because the sound came out so well.
